The FDNY World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program oncology team was formed in 2012 when cancers were recognized as WTC-related by NIOSH. The certification of cancers was a process that took many years. FDNY documentation of cancer cases before and after 9/11 provided critical data to support this decision. Over time, more cancers were recognized as related to the exposures at Ground Zero.
Our oncology team began with nurse Laura Wilson and Dr Ellen Koffler. We now have a dedicated medical team of 8 RNs, 3 NPs, 5 navigators, 1 invoice manager, 1 office manager, and 1 MD.
When a new cancer patient reaches out to us, the initial interview and intake is done by our NPs and doctor. The patient provides medical and social background so we can best direct them to expert care. The patient’s pathology is sent to NIOSH for certification, so we can begin to cover the costs of treatment. Each new patient is assigned a case manager nurse, works with the patient and family, guiding patients as they journey through the oncology treatment process. Our navigators ensure that reports are secured so that we can place authorizations to cover costs and follow our patients’ care.
Fortunately, in our tristate area, leading cancer centers do participate in the FDNY WTC Health Program. Patients can be assured of access to the best of care. Patients frequently get multiple opinions before deciding about care.
Our dedicated team provides professional, compassionate care. Our first responders deserve the best of care. Their service in rescue and recovery following 9/11 can never be forgotten.
